My editor, Daphne, did this meme that originated from The Artsy Reader Girl. Most people talk about positive things online and on social media, but what the hey–this is a list of the ten authors I don’t want to read again.

  1. Jose Saramago, because Blindness was confusing and it was like wading through a sea of incomprehensibility with the run-on sentences.
  2. Thomas Hardy (basically any preachy Victorian writer)
  3. Ernest Hemingway (blablabla, I am so manly, look at how I suffer because of war and women don’t understand me. Eyeroll.)
  4. Any vampire romance or fanfic based on said vampire romance or contrived romances in general. (I think it’s hard to write romance, actually. But I don’t like things that have essentially become cliches. I also veto any romance that depicts an abusive relationship as ‘normal’.)
  5. Ann Leckie (I am going to get so much hate for this because I didn’t enjoy Ancillary Justice. I saw where she was going and it’s definitely a refreshing take, but the writing style clearly wasn’t for me.)
  6. Liu Cixin. (Same reasons as above. Don’t kill me! Aaaaaaa!)
  7. Yukio Mishima. (He’s far too traditional for my liking.)
  8. Hard science fiction. Technically not an author, but the writer usually gets bogged up on details about how this or that engine works before they all go into a black hole or something.
  9. Charles Bukowski. He is overrated and self-indulgent.
  10. Jack Kerouac. I really did not enjoy “On The Road”.
