I am not a big TV watching person. I say this because I tend to lose interest in a lot of television programmes. I tried to get into popular ones like Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad, but I just didn’t like them. I’m not impressed by GoT’s gratuitous violence and you-know-what, and I don’t like the dreary look of Breaking Bad. I did watch Big Bang Theory for a while but I started disliking it. The characters of How I Met Your Mother also give me grief.
And yes, these are all examples from ages ago. So what TV shows do I like now, and why?
- The Good Place.
A friend recommended this to me. A jerk, Eleanor Shellstrop, ends up in what Michael the “angel” calls The Good Place after she dies. She’s told that since she was a good person who accumulated the most points in her life, she gets to enjoy her afterlife. However, there’s one problem — she’s not the person Michael describes her to be! Hilarity ensues as she meets the other people who’re destined to stay at The Good Place, and she realises nothing is as it seems.
If Sartre had lived today, I think he would have written this series. It’s smart, funny, and it’s got a lot of heart. It also questions what we think of as moral and immoral. Plus, the non-swearing swearing (they can’t swear in The Good Place so insults like “Holy Forking Shirtballs”) make me giggle.
2. Kim’s Convenience
Sorry, Fresh Off The Boat, this is so much better. What seems to be your typical immigrant family slice of life comedy offers us so much more. All right, maybe the immigrant thing and seeing Asians on screen isn’t that common (and it’s one thing they’re doing right, too). The jokes cover a whole range of issues, from the domestic ones (being married) and to larger ones at large, such as LGBTQIA rights and police brutality. It’s well-written and funny. I can’t wait for season 3 to come out.
3. Killing Eve
My lovely friend Jean recommended it to me and it’s so good. To be honest, I’ve only watched the first four episodes, but it’s proven to be a wild and thrilling ride. MI5 officer Eve (played by Sandra Oh) is fired from her job because she took the initiative to hunt down this killer who has been assassination prominent officials around the world. She gets more than what she’s bargained for, and the tension in this series is so very delicious.
The first season is over, so that means it’s not that much of a chore to binge watch everything in one go, but I’m trying not to do it.
So there you have it. The three shows I like watching. If you have any recommendations, just put them down in the comments.
